Author Richard Layard Richard Layard is a British economist and labour economist who is currently a professor at the London School of Economics.

He is best known for his work on unemployment and his book Happiness: Lessons from a New Science, in which he argues that economics should be based around maximizing happiness rather than maximizing wealth.

He is a member of the House of Lords and a Fellow of the British Academy, and has been a member of the Centre for Economic Performance since 1991.
